Freedom.. When we hear it first time, especially in America, that word does not sound so relevant anymore. I believe that America is one of the most liberal countries that has become over the years in this world. I believe that my country, South Korea, is also one of the liberal countries, perhaps I would not describe S. Korea as “the most” liberal country. There are still so many people living without freedom in some countries. For example, we see a lot of horrifying news about Syria. Think about all the children who live in Syria now, and all the refugees who flee to Europe, America, and some other countries. Although they escape to another country, that does not mean that they are free. They are still in refugee camps, where basically they are detained and can not go anywhere, and the condition of those camps as I saw on the news and videos is not safe. They are hungry, starving, ill, and suffering.
Birnbaum describes that the angel’s “advance is inexorable. No despotic army of whatever size can withstand my assault.” Thanks to the angle, at least there are people, country, and nation who care about those notorious actions and try to prevent them. For instance, America and Russia tried to reduce the violence in Syria and open more access to humanitarian aid during Obama’s administration. Although it did not successfully achieve, and there is currently conflicts between America and Russia, I believe that there will be a blight news hopefully soon.
Birnbaum illustrates that “freedom is a precious gift, which further unleashes mankind other potentials. More valuable than the rarest germ.” Freedom is an opportunity to seek, act, and achieve their pursuits and happiness without being restricted. It is important, because it will enhance one’s interest, hope, and eventually potential. Freedom can be complex, especially for the new generation. For example, I was born during the era when the war ended and things had changed and developed. Since I was born, I never thought about living without freedom. I think that freedom can be fully respected by those who actually experience the protracted war. However, we young generation should understand how hard our grand-grandparents, grandparents, our parents put a lot of effort to make the country emancipated.
There is no such a thing as complete, total freedom. Birnbaum states that “Interlined with man’s AUTONOMY. Interesting, as we are always at-risk for the Tyranny of the Majority. And are always at-risk for demagoguery. Yet, by-and-large, matters seem to work out.” Although we see terrifying news about Syria, there are terrorism acts in America, and nuclear threatening from North Korea, we should not give up seeking freedom. We should always look for it, and although we have it now, we should always appreciate it.
해방… 우리가 처음 들었을때, 특히 미국에서, 그 단어는 더이상 우리와 연관 되어있는것 같지 않을수도 있다. 나는 미국이 지금 현재 가장 자유국들중에 한 나라라고 생각한다. 나는 내가 태어난곳인 대한민국도 자유국들중의 하나라고 생각한다. 비록 가장 자유국이진 않지만 말이다. 여전이 어떤 나라에는 자유 없이 살아가는 사람들이 많다. 예를들어 우리는 시리아에 대한 끔찍한 뉴스들을 듣곤 한다. 그곳에 사는 아이들을 생각해보아라… 유럽이나 미국 또는 다른 나라로로 도망가는 사람들을 생각해보아라.. 그들이 다른 나라로 도망간다고 하더라고, 자유를 얻는것은 아니다. 그 새로운 나라에도 피난처들이 갇혀있는 캠프들이있다. 사실상 그곳은 자유가 없는것이나 마찬가지다. 안전하지않고, 사람들은 굶고, 고통받고, 그리고 아픔을 받기때문이다.
범바움은 엔젤의 “충고는 멈출수 없다. 어떠한 크기의 배치된 군대더라고 나의 주장을 막을수 없다” 라고 표현한다. 그 엔젤들 덕부에, 최소한 그 악명적인 행동에 대해 관심이있고 그것을 막으려고하는 사람과 나라들이 있다. 예를들어, 오바마 정권때 미국과 러시아는 시리아에있는 폭력을 주리고 인간에대한 존중을 좀더 열어보려고했다. 비록 이것은 현재 실패했고, 미국과 러시아는 적대관계에 있지만, 나는 언제가는 좋은 소식이있을거라는 희망이있다.
범바움은 “자유는 소중한 선물이고 사람의 잠재성을 보여주는것이라고 한다. 희귀한 보석보다 더 중요한것이다”라고 표현한다. 자유는 우리가 행복과 추구하는것을 찾고, 활동하고, 그것을 위해 달려가는가서 제한없이 얻는것이다. 자유는 중요하다 왜냐하면 우리의 흥미, 희망, 그리고 궁극적으로 잠재성을 향상시키기때문이다. 자유는 복잡한 존재이다 특히 요즘 시대에서는. 예를들어 나는 전쟁이 다 끝나고 나라가 발전하는 시대에 태어났다. 그래서 나는 자유 없이 산다라는 것을 전혀 생각해본적이 없다. 자유라는 것은 우리 할아버지 할머니 그리고 우리 부모님들이 더 잘 이해할것이고 더 존중할것이다. 그들은 직접 그 전쟁을 겪으셨기때문이다. 하지만 우리 젊은 사람들도 얼마나 우리 조상님들이 힘들게 전쟁을 겪으시고 나라를 발전 시켰는지 이해해야하고, 항상 존중하도록 노력해야한다.
완전한 자유라는 것은 존재하지 않는다. 범바움은 “흥미롭게 항상 우리는 위험에 있지만, 궁극적으로 그것은 다 해결될것이다” 라고 말한다. 우리가 비록 시리아에대한 나쁜 소식, 미국에서 여전히 테러 활동, 그리고 북한의 핵무기에대한 뉴스들을 접하곤 하지만, 우리는 희망을 버려서는 안된다. 지금이 힘들지라고, 자유라는 것에 항상 감사해야한다.
